Indian share market weekly roundup (June 29- July 4)

This week, the Indian share market was in a volatile condition. Indices went up and down frequently althrough the week but did not see much gain compared to their last week’s closing. Investors are not taking too much risk as the general budget will be presented on June 6, 2009.


The 30-share Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange gained 1.01% or 148.41 points compared to its closing on June 26, 2009. It ended at 14,913.05 points.

The Sensex observed an intra-week high of 14,955.5 points and a low of 14,355.5 points.

Sensex did not see much change throughout the week. On June 29, Sensex fell 21 points following a rise of 191 points. It closed at 14,785.74 points.

On June 30, 2009 Sensex observed a steep downward slide which resulted into profit booking. It went down by 291 points and closed at 14,493.84 points. Compared to Monday’s closing, it was 1.97% low.

On July 1, 2009 Sensex saw some upward movement as traders bought stocks. Realty, energy and banking stocks were major gainers on Wednesday pushing the Sensex to 14,645.47 points. Compared to previous days closing, Sensex advanced 1.05% to 151.63 points.

On July 2, 2009, the Economic Survey 09 was presented at the parliament which proposed huge reform of the current system but it did not affect the sharemarket.

Sensex rose only 13 points to 14,694.31 points.

The BSE Midcap index gained 0.32% compared to its previous weekly close and the BSE Smallcap index went up 0.42%.

At BSE, major gainers of the week are:

Tata Steel…12.7%

ONGC……. 8.8 %



DLF ……….3.5%

Losers are:

Tata Motors…11.6%



Hero Honda…..2.6%



On the other hand, Nifty of the National Stock Exchange gained 1.1% compared to its last week’s closing and ended at 4,424.25 points.

Nifty observed an intra-week high of 4,439.9 points and a low of 4,249.7 points.

On June 29, 2009, Nifty rose 0.35% at 4,390.95 points.

On June 30, 2009, Nifty also observed a downfall of 2.27% ending at 4,291.1 points.

Nifty gained 1.16% or 4,340.9 points on July 1, 2009.

On July 2, 2009, Nifty gained 0.18% to 4,348 points.

Foreign investors:

This week foreign investors bought stocks worth $387 million. In the previous week they bought shares worth $518.5 million.
