India is going to face West Indies in a crunch game of Group A on September 30 at Johannesburg. India goes into the game knowing the fact that their semi final progress not only depends on a win over West Indies, rather an Australian defeat to Pakistan in the other game of the day would also be needed. In fact, India would also have to win over West Indies with a margin that would bridge up the run rate difference of 2.08 that current exists between India and Australia. West Indies may have already been out of the tournament with two defeats in a row to Pakistan and Australia, but the second string Caribbean side have showed some inspirational performance and they would definitely like to end their Champions Trophy 2009 mission on winning note. So, India would not find it easy to win over the Caribbean side with a big margin. This is where you can find the indication of an exciting match.

India’s fate would have been decided on Monday, if their game against Australia was not called off due to heavy rain during the game. Both India and Australia shared a point each. With this match being abandoned, Pakistan has ensured their semi final spot from the group with 4 points from 2 games as they won both of their games against West Indies and India. Australia now has 3 points with a match against Pakistan left in hand. If Australia wins over Pakistan, they would go into the last four as Group A leader and Pakistan will take the second place. However, if Pakistan defeats Australia on Wednesday, then India, who so far has 1 point, would have a clear chance to progress to the semi final.

However, India has to maintain a good run rate because if Australia loses to Pakistan and India wins over West Indies, then both India and Australia will have equal 3 points. Then net run rate would naturally come to decide who would accompany Pakistan from the group in semi final. At this moment, Australia holds an advantage over India on net run rate. However, the good thing is that India will be playing against a West Indies who has lost much of its strength as their squad does not include the front line players like Gayle, Sarwan, Chanperpaul and many others. Good news for India is that they would know the result of the Australia match in the midway of their match against West Indies because India will be taking on the Caribbean side in a day/night affair.

I think that India has all the chances to win over West Indies maintaining a good run rate, but what they have to pray for is Australia’s defeat to Pakistan. For example, if Australia loses to Pakistan by 54 runs, then India would have to win over West Indies by 51 runs (if both Australia and India bat first).

PTI News reported:

India approach tomorrow's game against the West Indies with a prayer on the lips that Pakistan would somehow prevail over Australia by a big margin in the day's first game in Centurion.
If it happens, India would need to up their net run-rate dramatically, besides winning the match, to stand a chance of making the last-four stage.

However, one thing is pretty much certain that India must improve on their current bowling performance if they are to confine the West Indies batsmen within a low score. Indian pacers and spinners could not yet get their rhythm back in the tournament. Against Pakistan, India conceded 302 runs and Harbhajan-led India’s spin attack looked pretty much ordinary. Barring Ashish Nehra, no other Indian pacer could show their talent and skill. India brought two chances in their bowling department against Australia, but that was of no avail as the Aussie was looking to score a big total before rain stopped the game.

AFP reported:

Defending champions Australia were on course for a big total before the play was called off due to heavy rain in the day-night match.

They posted 234-4 in 42.3 overs after winning the toss on a good batting track, with Michael Hussey (67), skipper Ricky Ponting (65) and Tim Paine (56) all making the most of a mediocre Indian attack.

I think, India would stick to their changes against West Indies too. I do not think that RP Singh would be brought back against West Indies, while Amit Mishra’s leg spin now looks more effective than Yusuf Pathan’s spin. So, I think, India will feature the same bowling line up against West Indies too.

For West Indies, they put on an inspirational display against Australia in their second game. Their pacers Roach, Tonge, Bernard and Sammy tested Australian top orders, even though a magical innings from Johnson guided Australia towards a competitive total. Then West Indies batsmen specially Fletcher and Dowlon have showed that they have talents to play at this level. They have good all rounders like Sammy and Millers. After losing to Australia, Captain Floyd Reifer said that they may have been out of the tournament, but still they do not want to give up on their wishes to go back to their country with some pride intact.

Sknvibes reported:

The loss means that West Indies is officially out of contention for semifinal qualification in the tournament, but Reifer said that his side is not ready to call it a day just yet.

“As we play as a team, stick together and keep working hard, improving our skills, we will get better. We must show improvement, though. We still have more time to prepare and improve our skills and our mental attitude. Getting to international standards is all about the mental attitude,” the Captain told CMC after the match.

So, Dhoni and his side would make a big mistake if they think that they would find West Indies very easy to break. Rather, I think, West Indies has all the ability to give India a shock, and if things go wrong for India, I can not even rule a West Indies victory as well. India also looks to maintain a good run rate and to do so, they must take some risks and herein lies the danger for team India.

There is no doubt, India is clearly favorite against West Indies. However, West Indies side is expected to be determined to prove that their presence did not mar the competitiveness factor of the tournament. India, on the other hand, would like to win and at the same time maintain a good run rate. So, the pressure would definatley be on India, while West Indies will be free flying as they know that they have nothing to lose in the game, but have everything to win.
