The National Institute of Design (NID) is considered as one of the top institutions in the field of design after Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany. The institution offers various courses in designing. It is an autonomous institution under the department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry and recognized by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) as a scientific and industrial design research organization. After India’s independence, various changes were taking place in the country. New technologies were introduced at the production section. In order to successfully implement new technologies, Indian government invited the renowned design team of Charles and Ray Eames to create a programme of design that would help the small industries of India. On the basis of their report, the Indian government set up the National Institute of Design in 1961. Graduates of NID have been very successful in various fields in many sectors of commerce, industry and social development. On July 19, 2004, NID commenced the I.T. Integrated Design Programmes at its Gandhinagar campus. The Gandhinagar campus currently offers degrees in three disciplines.
