IITM is one of the most reputed institutes for technological education and research in India. The IITM was established in 1959 at Chennai, in Madras. It was a result of collaboration between Germany and India. In 1956, the German government offered technical assistance to establish a higher education institute for engineering in India. In 1959, the two government signed agreement in Bonn, West Germany. The Indian Institute of Technology in Madras was inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs in 1959.

Currently, IIT Madras houses about 460 faculties, 4500 student and 1250 administrative and supporting staff. The campus occupies an area of about 250 hectares. IITM has fifteen academic departments and advanced research centers in various disciplines on engineering and pure sciences. It has about 100 laboratories. Its faculties are highly qualified and noted for their works in the international arena.
