India vs Afghanistan Time and Live TV Channel Information

India is going to take on Afghanistan in the opening match of T20 World Cup 2010. This tournament is taking place in West Indies and if you remember, in 2007 ICC World Cup cricket tournament, India suffered a humiliating exit in West Indies. So, many Indian fans are now perhaps worried that if the same kind of upset happens against Afghanistan.
Of course, I don’t think that there is a lot to worry about this match because Afghanistan is not a great cricket nation and even ten years ago they did not play this sport. Before anything, I am going to give the time of the match. The match is going to take place on 1 May 2010 (Saturday). The good thing is that the starting time of the match is good for the Indian viewers. The match will start on 13:30 GMT or 09:30 am local time and 09:00 Indian Standard Time.
The match will take place at the Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. There is perhaps no comparison between India and Afghanistan in cricket. India is the richest country when it comes to cricket and Indian players earn millions of dollars every year. An Afghanistan cricketer just gets around $75 per day when he is on tour. So, it is the match between the richest players and the poorest players.
Ten years ago cricket did not officially exist in Afghanistan. It was suppressed, like most things, by the Taleban, although the religious rulers later relented on the grounds that the sport had frequent breaks in it for prayers. In 2008, Afghanistan entered the lowest rung of cricket’s international ladder, playing the likes of Japan and Vanuatu. Now they are one of the top 12 nations competing in the 20-over World Cup.
Hamid Hassan, the fastest Afghan bowler, is a fan of American films, particularly ones that star Sylvester Stallone. When he bowls, wearing a bandana and black greasepaint on his cheeks, he resembles Rambo, but it is another Stallone creation to whom he compares Afghanistan’s journey.

As I said that just 10 years ago there was no cricket in the country. Hardly anyone used to play or know about this sport. Thus, the rise of Afghanistan in international cricket has been quite impressive. In the last 10 years, from nothing they have started and they did not have any necessary infrastructure. They just got some support from some other countries and ICC. This helped them to become the 12th ranked team in the world. Still, I don’t think that for tomorrow’s match they will be a big threat for Afghanistan.
Afghanistan, a fifth-division team in the International Cricket Council’s league system only two years ago, should, logically, have finally reached the limit of its abilities. Yet that has been said of it at most stages in its rise. India will be wary. It remembers its elimination by Bangladesh in the 2007 World Cup, the last major tournament played in the West Indies. Lose to the Afghans and it will be tough for India to find a way back — it plays its second pool match only 24 hours later against South Africa, traditionally a fast starter in big tournaments.

As for Indian cricket team, they are in good form and they won the opening T20 World Cup 2007 in South Africa. However, then months ago, they did very bad in the second T20 World Cup that took place in England in 2009. That T20 world cup took up just after the end of IPL and it seemed that the Indian players became very tired after playing for five or six weeks of continuous cricket in the Indian Premier League. I think that the same thing has happened this time too. In the last few weeks, all the Indian players will be playing IPL and earning a lot of money. Naturally, they are now very exhausted and they have made a long plane journey to West Indies. As I have already mentioned that West Indies is not a very good place for Indian cricket. They often struggle in the pitch of West Indies. So, this is the only cause of concern for the Indian team. Still, I don’t think that Afghanistan will be a very big threat and I am not expecting any upset. Now, let me talk about TV channel entry. You might have already known that ESPN STAR SPORTS have the TV rights for the tournament and they will broadcast all the matches live.
