INS Shivalik: The first Indian warship commissioned by Indian Navy

On April 29, 2010, Indian Defense Minister, A K Antony commissioned “INS Shivalik” the first stealth warship designed and built entirely in India. The ship was built by the Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL) and cost Rs. 2,300 crore. 60% of the components have been built in India. In the next ten years, Indian Navy would have ten more such ships. These ships will serve the Indian Navy for the first half of the 21st century. My News.in reports:

Measuring 142.50 metres from bow to stem with a beam of 16.9 metres and depth of 9.2 metres, Shivalik has a range of about 5,000 nautical miles at a curising speed of 18 knots and a compliment of 257 personnel, including 35 officers.

The indigenously designed stealth frigate has a deep displacement of 6,100 tonnes and is armed with advanced vertically launched surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to- air missles, point defence missile system, air-launched submarine missiles, anti-submarine rockets and long range early warning radars.

One of the most prominent features of INS Shivalik is that it can operate Sea King helicopter.

Mr. Antony expressed his happiness over the launch of INS Shivalik and said that Indian Navy were more prepared to secure the waters of the country from external threats. Mr. Antony also said that it was a matter of great happiness that instead of buying ships from abroad, India is now building ships inside the country.
