May 1, 2010, is the Maharashtra day. It is celebrated in the Indian state of Maharashtra. On May 1, 1960, Maharashtra attained statehood and Bombay became its capital. Prior to that Bombay was divided into two states- Mahrashtra and Gujarat on the basis of different languages, under the Saurashtra re-organization act.

Maharashtra is located in the western part of India. The word “Maha” means Great and “Rashtra” means nation. Maharashtra means Great Nation. On the west of Maharashtra, there is the Arabian Sea, Gujarat and the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the northwest, Madhya Pradesh to the northeast and Chattishgarh to the east, Karnataka to the south, Andhra Pradesh to the southeast and Goa to the southwest. The state occupies an area of 307,731 km2. Maharashtra is the second most populous, the richest and the third largest state of India in terms of size. In FY 2005-06, Maharashtra contributed 15% of the country’s industrial output and 1.2% of India’s GDP.
