Chelsea is the Champion of English Premier League 2009-10

Chelsea has become the champion of English Premier League 2009-10 after they defeated Wigan Athletic 8-0 on Sunday in their last match of the season. Chelsea needed 3 points from this game in order to keep their 1 point advantage over the second-placed Manchester United who also pulled off a 4-0 convincing victory over Stoke City.

Chelsea opened scoring through Nicolas Anelka in the 6th minute of the match before Frank Lampard converted a penalty stroke to double the lead in the 32nd minute. Wigan could restrict the Blues to 2 goals till the half-time, but after the break Chelsea came all out with Didier Drogba scoring a hat-trick and Salomon Kalou striking 2 goals. In the 90th minute, Ashley Cole scored the 8th goal for the home side.

With this hat-trick, Didier Drogba took his goal tally to 29 goals, and thus, becoming the highest scorer of the season leaving behind Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney who has 26 goals to his credit.

With this victory, Chelsea retained the Premier League title after 4 years. The West London club last won the title in 2005-06.
