England has made a good start to their pre world cup practice match campaign by defeating Mexico 3-1. At the half time, England was leading by 2-1. For England, Ledley King, Peter Crouch and Glenn Johnson scored one goal each while the only goal of Mexico came from Franco.
The match was played in the Wembley Stadium in front of 88,638 fans.
England looked much better in the second half with Glenn Johnson scoring an excellent goal with a long range shot. Mexico could not create as much opportunities in the second half as they did in the first half. However, Barrera failed to score from a right side cross in the 77th minute. Gerrard’s free kick in the 66th minute just missed the target.
England made 6 changes in the second half. Green, Crouch, Ferdinand, Walcott, Carrick and Milner were substituted by Hart, Defoe, Carragher, Lennon, Huddlestone and Adam Johnson respectively.
The score line perhaps did not justify the fact that it was a competitive match and Mexico had fair amount of ball possessions and attacks. Mexican strikers missed several opportunities especially in the first half of the match.
England did not have a very good start in the match with Mexico dominating in the initial period. In fact, England could not create any effective chance before taking lead on the 17th minute through Ledley King. King, who returned to international stage with this match after 3 years, scored from a Gerrard corner. Gerrard kept the ball in the far post where Crouch headed towards the middle before King headed it home.
In the 22 minutes, Rooney had a good run on the left flank, but the Manchester United striker lost the control of the ball thanks to excellent defending from the visiting side. Four minutes later, Rooney got the ball in a good position, but he was offside.
England got the second goal through Peter Crouch on the 35th minute. Rooney’s header was excellently saved by the Mexico keeper, but Crouch scored from the rebound ball.
Mexico reduced the difference when Franco scored from a goalmouth scramble on the 48th minute. In the first half, Mexico squandered off at least 2 scoring chances as English keeper Green made two great saves in one-to-one position with Carlos Vela being the culprit on both occasions.
England will play next match against Japan in Austria on 30 May 2010.
