India vs Zimbabwe Tri Nation Series 2010: Suresh Raina Relying on Bowlers

India captain Suresh Raina thinks that the Zimbabwe tour would be a learning place for the team’s young inexperienced pacers. A second-string India team set for Zimbabwe on 25 May. In Zimbabwe, India will take part in a tri-nation series involving Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka before playing two twenty20 matches against Zimbabwe.

Following a poor show in the recently concluded Twenty20 World Cup 2010, Indian selectors decided to rest a number of senior members of the squad including captain MS Dhoni, while some others were unavailable for selection due to injuries.

Zimbabwe’s pacer friendly condition would be a huge challenge for the young Indian cricketers. Indian pacers failed to perform in West Indies, while Indian batsmen fell agonizingly on bouncy tracks, and thus, accelerating their collective failures in the Caribbean.

Suresh Raina, who is going to lead India’s senior team for the first time, believes that Zimbabwe condition would help the young pacers to prove themselves in the tour, while Indian batsmen have an opportunity to show their ability to perform on bouncy wickets.

He told The Telegraph, “We have some very good medium pacers. Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar and Ashok Dinda have done well in domestic cricket to earn their place in the side. The Zimbabwe wickets provide them a good opportunity to prove themselves again.”

In the absence of some of the senior bowlers, Indian pace attack gets a new look. The pace attack incorporates Umesh Yadav, Ashok Dinda, Pankaj Singh and Vinay Kumar, and neither of them has previous experience of representing India one-day international. Dinda and Kumar played just 1 T20 international for India so far.

Though they are inexperienced on international circuit, all of them performed very well in the domestic tournaments. Selectors called them up having been impressed by their performances in the tournaments like IPL.

India will face Zimbabwe in the first match of the Tri Nation series 2010 on 28 May.
