“Madhya” means “Middle” and Pradesh” means state. Madhya Pradesh is located in central India and its capital is Bhopal. It remained the largest state in India till November 1, 2000. The state borders with Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. It occupies an area of 308,252 km².

The Bhimbekta rock shelters reveal the earliest existence of human life in India. Its stone age rock paintings are about 9000 years old.

The city of Ujjain also known as Avanti was a major urbanization center in the sixth century BC. It also served as the chief city of the kingdom of Malwa or Avanti.

When Chandragupta Maurya united northern India in 320 BCE it included the entire modern day Madhya Pradesh. King Ashoka’s wife came from Vidisha which is said to have situated on the north or current day Bhopal.

After the decline of the Mauryan Empire, different dynasties- the Sakas, Kushanas, and local dynasties took over Madhya Pradesh. During that time, Ujjain came out as a major center of commerce in western India. It was also an important Hindu Buddhist center.
