The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) was created through a legislative enactment in 1969. The board was created for the development and promotion of school education in the state of Punjab. In 1987, board’s act was amended by Vidhan Sabha and converted it into an autonomous institution.

Currently, PSEB overlooks all the major aspects of school education in Punjab. It is continuously working on improving the quality of school education and serves as an advisory body to the sate Govt. in the matter of the development of school education.

PSEB makes necessary arrangements to conduct public examinations at school level.

Currently, the board conducts three examinations- Middle, Matriculation and Senior Secondary Level. Result for the middle school examination has already been declared on May 15, 2010.

The board also determines curriculum, courses, text books which are done by experts. The board has an academic wing which prepares and revises syllabuses regularly. The board also overlooks various aspects of text book publication including preparations, compilation, improvement, publication, printing and sales of textbooks. It also affiliates various schools to the board.
