VIT is a private co-educational university located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The university was founded in 1984 by G.Viswanathan, a former parliamentaria and minister of Tamil Nadu state government. Initially known as Vellore Engineering College, it was a self-financing institution. G Viswanathan is currently serving as the VC of the university and intends to implement a strategic plan to further increase the overall capability of the institution. The institution was deemed university status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Government of India in 2001. VIT has been ranked 10th on the list of top 15 engineering universities in India by a study conducted by the Times of India.
