A victory over Australia would take Ghana very close to progressing to the knock-out stage. Though their performance in the 1-0 win over Serbia was not very impressive, they would not mind as 3 points came from the match. Ghana has other reasons to be happy with their first round performance.

Ghana, who were missing their best player Michael Essien, was looking for a descent start and eventually started with a win. Moreover, Ghana is the only African side who picked up full points from their tournament opener.

Australia came to South Africa with the hopes of repeating their success in 2006 when they made it to the Round of 16 in the World Cup held in Germany. This time, they have had a disastrous start in South Africa. Now, the Ghana encounter is a must win affair for the Australians who have to win their two remaining matches in their pursuit of reaching the next round.

Though missing Essien is a big blow for the Black Stars, Ghana still has a number of quality players. Fulham’s John Paintsil adds quality and experience to their defense, while their midfield features the players like Kevin-Prince Boateng, Asamoah, Appiah and Muntari. In Asamoah Gyan, Ghana has a very good scorer as he netted 20 goals in 40 appearances for his country.

Australia would also miss one of their best players Tim Cahill who received a red card in the first match and would only be available for their last group stage match against Serbia. Central midfielder Vince Grella would also sit out for the match with a knee injury. However, they have some quality players in Kewell, Čulina, Emerton, Garcia, Valeri and Holman who can fill up the gaps of Cahill and Grella.
