The Panchayat Raj system is mainly popular in South Asian region including- India, Pakistan, Nepal. The word “Panchayat” is an amalgamation of two words- “Panch” which means five, and “yat” meaning assembly.

The Panchayat is a kind of informal assembly headed by respected elderly people chosen by the community. These assemblies are formed to resolve disputes between individuals and village people. In modern day India, the government decentralized few administrative functions to the village level.
