Located on the Bangalore National Highway (NH-47) 10km from the Salem city Periyar University is a reputed university of Tamil Nadu. It was established in 1997 by the Act 45 of Government of Tamil Nadu.

The University campus covers an area of 100 acres including all the departments and administrative building.

The University is named after renowned social reformer, “Thanthai Periyar.” The university started its journey with three departments-Commerce, Geology and Mathematics.

In 1998, the University Grants Commissions bestowed the 2f status and 12(B) status in 2005. The university also accredited with NAAC.

The vision of Periyar University is “Wisdom maketh world.” Since its inception, the university has been continuously working on to spread knowledge and skill among its pupils. The overall educational style of the university mainly focuses on providing knowledge to the people of the backward section of the society.
