Probable Squad of England vs Algeria World Cup Match

England faces Algeria in their second match of the World Cup 2010 on 18 June. Following their unimpressive performance against USA in the opening fixture, England is now determined to win over Algeria. Coach Fabio Capello is now facing a selection dilemma ahead of the second match with Gareth Barry available for selection.
Gareth Barry is all set to return to action after recovering from his ankle injury which kept him out of action for five weeks. English fans are expecting that Barry’s presence would strengthen England’s midfield. Given his performance in the qualifying round, Barry could be a shield for the defense and coordinate the defense with the midfield.
Now, the question is which formation Fabio Capello is going to follow against Algeria. Considering all the aspects, it seems 4-1-2-3 would be the prefect for England with Barry playing as the holding midfielder just ahead of the back four. It allows playmakers Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard to operate freely in the midfield ahead of Barry and create opportunities for Wayne Rooney. Gerrard and Lampard would occupy the left and right sides of the midfield respectively.
It seems that Capello would not do the same mistake by overlooking Joe Cole in the next match. Playing on the left wing, he can contribute to English attack with his creativity, while Aaron Lenon would provide crosses and passes from the left flank.
Wayne Rooney could be deployed as the lone striker up front. There are many who may oppose this idea claiming that Rooney needs helps from someone like Emile Heskey who could create space for him in the box. However, one can not deny the fact that Rooney was very effective for Manchester United playing as a lone striker last season. It takes less from him physically and gives him more firepower in the box. More importantly, Rooney would never feel alone in attack with Gerrard, Lampard, Joe Cole and Lennon always working hard to create scoring opportunities for Rooney.
In the defense, Carragher would partner Terry at the centre ahead of Upson and Dawson who lack experience of playing at this level. Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson, playing on the left and right wings respectively, have attacking intent too.
After Green’s gaffe against USA, it seems more likely that David James would be seen in England goal. Joe Hart has been impressive in training, but given his lack of experience at the highest level would not strengthen his claim. However, there are people who also mention James’ ‘Calamity James’ tag attached to his name indicating his big match howlers, but it seems Capello would play it safe by giving the gloves to highly experienced James.
Formation: 4-1-2-3
England Squad (Probable)
David James (GK) - Glen Johnson, Jamie Carragher, John Terry, Ashley Cole - Gareth Barry - Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard - Aaron Lennon, Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney
