The Punjabi University was established on April 30, 1962, in the princely state of Patiala. The main goal behind building this institution was to improve the language, art, and literature of Punjab. Since its inception, Punjabi University evolved continuously and become the largest university in the region.

The University campus is spread over 600 acres of language. It has 500 devoted teachers who are highly knowledgeable teachers in their respective fields. They are providing education to about 9,000 students in an unique multi-faceted, multi-pronged and multi-faculty environment.

The University has 65 Teaching and Research Departments, five Regional Centers, six Neighbourhood Campuses and 166 Colleges affiliated to it.

The University has several milestones to its credit. It published more than 3,000 books in Punjabi language covering a wide range of areas. It also has a special Punjabi Reference Library which has been created to cater the linguistic and cultural needs of the Punjabi speaking people living abroad.
