Germany is the most favorite to progress to the next round from this group, while Serbia, Ghana and Australia may vie for the other spot. Ghana’s recent form is not impressive. They lost to Netherlands 4-1 in a friendly fixture recently which was followed by a 1-0 unimpressive victory over Latvia.

Serbia’s recent form is also mixed. They defeated Cameroon 4-3 in their last friendly affair, but suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of fellow World Cup qualifier New Zealand last month.

Ghana is without their best player Michael Essien who failed to recover from injury in time to catch the flight to South Africa. However, there is good news in Ghana camp as Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari has recovered fully from his thigh injury and could be part of the opening game. Ghana has some other key players in John Paintsil, Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan and Matthew Amoah.

Manchester United center back Nemanja Vidić is the biggest hope of Serbia. He along with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanović would have to lead Serbian defense, while their midfield features the quality players like Dejan Stanković, Zoran Tošić, Milan Jovanović and Nenad Milijaš. Birmingham City’s Nikola Žigić would lead Serbia’s forward line up.
