South Africa vs Mexico World Cup 2010: Marquez, Guillermo Franco Back to Training

Mexico is all set to begin their World Cup campaign on Friday (11 June) when they face hosts South Africa in the opening match of FIFA World Cup 2010 at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. Ahead of the opening game, there is good news for the Mexico fans as star defender Rafael Marquez and striker Guillermo Franco have returned to full training after shaking off their respective injuries.

Barcelona veteran Rafael Marquez picked up a leg injury during their 2-1 victory over the world champions Italy in a friendly match last week. However, the 31-year-old has successfully got over it and is now ready for the Friday’s match.

Striker Guillermo Franco has also started regular training with the other members of the squad after recovering from his muscle problem. Franco, who has 7 goals in 21 appearances for Mexico, is one of those very few World Cup players who are currently out of contract in club football.

So, it could be an added pressure for the former West Ham United striker whose future is now uncertain. However, his ‘free-agent’ status could also be an added motivation for him considering World Cup could be an opportunity for him to prove his talent and catch the attention of the clubs.

Mexico has come with a highly experienced squad which includes the players like Óscar Pérez, Márquez, Osorio, Magallón, Gerardo Torrado, Medina and Cuauhtémoc Blanco.

Both South Africa and Mexico would like to have a winning start to the World Cup. South Africa may have the home advantage, but Mexico has experienced players who can make the job for them. Besides experienced players, they have the young talents like Carlos Vela and Giovani dos Santos.

Besides South Africa and Mexico, Group A also includes France and Uruguay. France and Mexico are considered to be pre-tournament favorites from this group. However, Uruguay always poses threats for the super powers, while South Africa would like to capitalize on their home advantage.
