The Way Capello Boys Can Reach Knockout Stage: England vs Slovenia

Following an abject display in their goalless stalemate against Algeria, England is now in a position from where they can suffer an early exit from the ongoing World Cup 2010. The equation for England is pretty much simple. They have to defeat Slovenia in their last group stage match on 23 June in Port Elizabeth to secure a place in the Round of 16.

English fans were happy when England was drawn in Group C alongside USA, Algeria and Slovenia. However, England’s poor show against USA and Algeria has meant that they would now have to wait for the result of their last group stage match to know if they can progress further in the tournament.

With 2 points from 2 matches, England now stands 3rd in the point table behind Slovenia and USA. Slovenia leads the table with 4 points. Though England and USA are level on 2 points, USA is occupying the second spot on better scoring.

While a victory over Slovenia would ensure England’s qualification to the next round, USA would face Algeria in their last match looking to pick up 3 points in what would earn the Americans a place in the knock out stage. Even a draw would not be enough for Fabio Capello’s men as any result of the USA-Algeria match would mean either USA or Algeria would accompany Slovenia in the second round from the group.

It is expected that Capello would feature a more attacking line up against Slovenia whose defense at times looked shaky against USA. Joe Cole could come in, while either Upson or Dawson would partner Terry at the center of the defense with Carragher missing on card problem.
