Wayne Rooney Must Play Better for England against Algeria

England started their World Cup mission with an unconvincing 1-1 draw against USA on Saturday. Now, ahead of England’s next match against Algeria on 18 June, Wayne Rooney has become a matter of big concern for the Three Lions.

Rooney is undoubtedly England’s biggest hopes in the tournament. However, the Manchester United forward was not at his best against USA and English fans are now worried about it. Moreover, their worry could be doubled to know that Rooney missed training on Monday as he took a minor knock to his ankle in the match against USA.

Rooney was seen in the swimming pool on Monday along with Ashley Cole and Ledley King whose availability in the rest of the tournament is now uncertain as he suffered a groin muscle strain and could be out of action for 2 weeks. So, the Tottenham Hotspur defender would definitely miss the Algeria match.

Wayne Rooney, however, is expected to be available for the Algeria fixture, but his performance in the opening match has disappointed many. Though he was deployed as striker alongside Heskey, Rooney was often seen playing all over the field, and thus, losing his strength up front. Everybody knows that he is a player who always wants to win the balls from opposition and even goes down sometimes to defend.

Rooney has always been praised for this quality, but in a competition like World Cup, he must save himself for the finishing touches; rather than roaming around in his own box to defend. Moreover, England team must raise their game in the coming weeks, if they want to repeat their 1966 success in South Africa.
