Anna University was established on September 4, 1978 to offer higher education in Engineering, Technology and various science related subjects to fulfill the needs of the country. It was established as a unitary type of university.

Aside from providing knowledge to students the university is also devoted in fostering cooperations between academic and the industrial community of the country.

Initially, the university had two constituent colleges- College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) which was established in 1794 and Madras Institute of Technology , Chrompet (MIT) established in 1949.

The campus of Anna University is situated in the southern part of Chennai. It spreads over 100 hectares of land. The Adyar river runs on the north of the campus and the Raj Bhavan is situated on the south.

The second campus is situated at Chrompet that extends over 20 hectares. The third campus is situated at Taramani extending over 80 hectares. It is located near the Instronic campus, Adyar.
