Apple iPhone 4 users will get free bumper cases but there will be no recall

Finally, at the press conference at Cupertino on July 16, 2010, Steve Jobs admitted that Apple iPhone 4 has problems with its antenna. The conference started at 1 p.m. EST, 10 a.m. PST press conference.

Apple CEO, Steve Jobs appeared on the stage. He first talked about Apple iPhone 4’s success story. Jobs said that engineers warned about the faulty antenna but it did not listen. Apple thought that it would not be a serious issue.

He said that they started getting complains about the antenna of iPhone 4 twenty two days ago but Apple engineers have been working about the problem for three months.

Jobs then presented results of some tests conducted by Apple engineers on various smartphones including the Blackberry, the HTC Droid Eris, and the Samsung Omnia 2 where they discovered similar drops in signals based on hand grip. Jobs concluded saying, “This is life in the smartphone world. Phones aren't perfect.”

Jobs also said that his company spent $100 million on its signal testing facility that contains anechoic chambers. It hired 10 PhD scientist and engineers to work on signals.

However, Steve Jobs blamed users mostly for the signal problem and urged them to correctly hold the phone. He also said, "We're not perfect. Phones aren't perfect either... But we want to make all of our users happy. We love making our users happy. We're going to talk about how we're going to do that today... but before we get into that I want to talk about the problems and the data we've got so that we can make sure we make all our users happy."

For those who are suffering from the death grip issue, Apple would provide a free bumper case with every iPhone 4 purchase from now on. Those who already bought the iPhone 4 would get a free bumper case. This will continue till September 30, 2010. Those of you who already bought a bumper case will receive full refund. If you are still unhappy, you can return the phone with or without the case and would receive a full refund within 30 days.

Jobs also cited AppleCare Number which revealed that only 0.55 percent of customers had any serious issue with their phones to contact with Apple and the return rates of iPhone 4 are a minuscule 1.7% down from 6 percent.

Finally, a good news for customers who have been waiting for white color iPhone 4. Jobs told reporters that White iPhone 4 will hit the stores in late July.
