Can Spain Become the Second European Team to win World Cup?

As the reigning European champion Spain has been one of the hot favorites to win the World Cup 2010 title in South Africa. They have already reached the semi final along with Germany, Netherlands and Uruguay. Now, Spain first has to defeat Germany in the semi final to emulate what the Germans did 36 years back in 1974.

In 1974 World Cup, West Germany became the first reigning European champion to win the World Cup and so far remained the only European team to have achieved this feat.

Now, Spain has a very good opportunity to repeat Germany’s success after 36 years in the ongoing World Cup 2010. In fact, this Spain squad has the ability to repeat history under coach Vicente del Bosque. They brought Spain their only second European title in 2008, their first since 1964.

However, Spanish fans are worried about their abject recent form that even does not come close to their Euro 2008 performance. In fact, Spain was fortune enough to escape a defeat to Paraguay in the quarter final.

They have some star players like Xavi, who was the best player of Euro 2008, David Villa, the Golden boot winner of Euro 2008, Andrés Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Carles Puyol, Sergio Ramos, Cesc Fàbregas and Fernando Torres. All of them are world class players and among the best players in the world in their respective positions.

There is no doubt, Spain has some players who can pull the string for their team while playing at their best. However, the problem is that none of them, except David Villa, seems to be at their best at the moment.

Overall, Spain must improve on their recent form, if they want to repeat the history after 36 years.
