Indian sharemarket August 3, 2009

August 3, 2009 was another big day for the Indian sharemarket. Both Sensex and Nifty observed an unprecedented rise closing at “52 week highs.” This gain was contributed by auto, realty and metal stocks. In the afternoon, when news of gains in the European share market came out, overseas investors tried to strengthen their position in the domestic market.


The Sensex at BSE closed at 15,924.23 points. It rose 253.92 points or 1.62% compared to its previous close. It observed an intra-day high of 15963.36 points which was also the highest in the last 52 weeks and a low of 15,608.40 points. Today at BSE, share prices of 1761 companies advanced while 953 declined.

The BSE Midcap index rose 2.36% and Smallcap index gained 1.74%. BSE auto index rose 4.6%, BSE Realty 4.19% and BSE Metal 3.41%


The Nifty at NSE crossed 4700 level closing at 4711.40 points advancing 74.95 points or 1.62%. It observed an intra day high 4723.30 points which was also the highest in the last 52 weeks.


Major gainers at BSE today are:

Hindalco Industries…7.98%

Mahindra & Mahindra…6.88%

Reliance Communications…5.17%

BHEL…………………………………5.15%

Tata Steel…………………………4.52%


On the other hand, companies whose share prices dropped are:

Hindustan Unilever… -2.25%

ITC……-0.7%

HDFC Bank………-0.39%

HDFC………………-0.17%
