Chelsea
hosts FC Porto in their opening match of UEFA Champions League 2009-10 season on 15 September at Stamford Bridge. Both teams, drawn in Group D, will look for a good start to their Europe mission. Chelsea has a very good recent record in Europe as they made five semi finals in last six seasons. Porto has been in good form recently as they are the defending champion of Portuguese league and picked up 10 points from 4 league matches this season with 3 wins and a draw. So, Chelsea may be favorite in the match, but they can not take their Portuguese visitors lightly in what would be dangerous for the English outfits.

Besides Chelsea and Porto, Group D also includes Spanish club Atl├ętico Madrid who are also one of the favorites to get into the first knockout round from this group. Naturally, both teams will like to have a favorable result in the match, knowing that Atl├ętico Madrid is also in the race. Chelsea would like to capitalize on their home advantage to pick up 3 points, while Porto would be happy even if they can come up with a draw.

Chelsea missed out on a place in the Champions league final last season through a controversial decision of referee that eventually resulted into a narrow defeat to eventual winner Barcelona in the semi final. This season Chelsea recruited former AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti, hoping that he would bring out European success at Stamford Bridge as he did with Milan. Ancelotti guided Milan to win two Champions League titles during his spell at the Italian club. He has also told to his Chelsea boys that Champions league final is their initial objective.

AFP reported:
"The first objective is to reach the final," Ancelotti said on Monday. "We want to arrive at the final before we think about winning it.
"It is not easy to reach the final but I think we have the possibility to do this.
"We have to try to do our best. We have a very strong team with fantastic players and a fantastic mental attitude."

Porto reached the quarter final last season where they lost to Manchester United on a 3-2 aggregate score. However, that does not mean that they are a weak side and Chelsea would find it very easy to get over the Portuguese side. Porto’s recent form is very inspirational as they won the Super Cup thanks to 2-0 victory over Pacos and has not lost any game so far this season.

Imscouting reported:
Whilst Chelsea usually start their Champions League group campaign with a win (five out of the last seven years), Porto, as ever, come into this match on the back of some fine domestic form.

Well, there is no doubt, Chelsea has a very strong squad and so far this season, they have been impressive in English premier league, winning all of their five games, and besides won the Community Shield at the start of the season. Besides home advantage, Chelsea has another positive side and that is- five of their regular players played for Porto in the past. So, it would be easier for them to know the weak points of the side as they are familiar with Porto’s style of football. Still, I do not think Chelsea can afford to take Porto lightly.
