Stoke City hosts Manchester United in a premier league fixture on 26 September 2009. Manchester United will go into the game on the back of a winning run of six games in all competitions. Moreover, the Red Devils are now full of confident after last weekend’s 4-3 win over arch rivals Manchester City. Stoke, on the other hand, takes on United following a confidence booster Carling Cup victory over Blackpool. Manchester United is currently at the second place with 15 points from 6 games, just three points down to leader Chelsea. Stoke City stands 10th in the league standing with 9 points from the same number of games of which they won 2, lost 2 and drew 2.

Match: Stoke City vs Manchester United; English Premier League 2009-10
Date: 26 September 2009
Venue: Britannia Stadium, England
Kick off: 15:00 BST; 14:00 GMT

Last season’s corresponding fixture saw Stoke losing to United by a narrow 1-0 margin. Naturally, Stoke will try their best to settle for at least a draw this time, even though they know the kind of performance required to put in order to achieve this target. However, the good thing is that Tony Pulis boys got off to a good start this season. In fact, they pulled off a 4-3 victory over Blackpool in the midweek League Cup fixture thanks to a late winner from Griffin.

BBC reported:

The Potters have started the campaign in fine form and boast twice as many points as they did at this stage last season. They go into Saturday's game against United after making a fine impression of Sir Alex Ferguson's side with a stoppage-time winner over Blackpool in the Carling Cup.

Both sides have some injury concerns ahead of the match. Stoke is missing Amdy Faye and Mamady Sidibe through back and knee problems respectively. Manager Tony Pulis has a lot to worry about two other important players: James Beattie and Ricardo Fuller. Both the strikers are uncertain for the game. Beattie is suffering from an ankle problem, while Fuller picked up a groin injury during the Carling Cup victory over Blackpool.

Manchester United may not have any new injury concern, but still the Red Devils are missing the services of Hargreaves, Obertan, Rafael and regular goalkeeper Van der Sar. However, reports out in the media claim that midfielder Owen Hargreaves is now on his way back to action following a long term knee injury. In fact, he had to undergo a knee surgery during this period and he went through a rehabilitation period of six months.

Sir Alex Ferguson played Tomasz Kuszczak in the Carling Cup third round victory over Wolverhampton, keeping Ben Foster in the side bench. However, the manager has ensured that Foster will start at Stoke City on Saturday, even though Foster made some big errors recently.

Telegraph reported:

Ferguson said: "With Edwin van der Sar still three weeks away from fitness, we thought it was a good opportunity for Tomasz to play on Wednesday.
"But Ben will play tomorrow and I haven't had any doubts about that. Ben hasn't had a lot of game experience, but he will be ok."
....... He said: "Stoke are a club on the way up. They had a very good home record last season, so we know it's not going to be an easy game.
"But the form of the team is coming and hopefully we can continue that way."

Well, I think, this is a good decision to keep faith in young Foster because he has huge potential and if Ferguson prefers Kuszczak over Foster only because of his recent errors, then it would come as a dent to his confident. Van der Sar is now at the last phase of his career and no body will be surprised to see him hanging his boots at the end of this season or next season. So, considering the long term benefit, Ferguson should keep faith in Foster, but he can bring in Kuszczak in the league cup and FA Cup matches, an approach that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger always follows.

I do not think that the injured players I have mentioned above would be big cause for concern for the Red Devils when they visit Stoke. Untied has a number of good players. In the front line, they have the likes of Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov. Midfield seems very strong in the presence of Giggs, Scholes, Nani, Park, Fletcher, Anderson, Michael Carrick and summer signing Antonio Valencia. Their defense got the much-needed confidence booster as central defender Rio Ferdinand returned in action recently. Vidic will occupy the centre defense, while there are some other quality defenders in Gary Neville, Patrice Evra, John O'Shea and Jonny Evans.

Here, I am giving possible starting line up of both sides from Sky Sports:
Stoke: Sorensen, Huth, Faye, Shawcross, Collins, Delap, Whelan, Whitehead, Etherington, Kitson, Tuncay.
Man Utd: Foster, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Giggs, Valencia, Fletcher, Anderson, Rooney, Berbatov.

Manchester United is clearly favorite. However, Stoke City will try to give some tough time to the visitors in front of home crowd. Stoke has a balanced squad, and if Beattie and Fuller pass the late fitness test and feature in the game, I think, Ferguson boys will go through a tough test. Even though Stoke lost both the league games to United last season, it will be a big mistake if the Red Devils feel any level of complacency. In fact, Stoke’s recent form is pretty good, if not impressive.
