Top Ten Highest Paid Football Coaches of 2009

Earlier, I wrote about Top Ten Transfer Deals of Summer 2009 in Europe. Today, I am going to write about the top ten highest paid soccer coaches who are currently earning big amounts. Here, I would like to indicate one thing is that all the coaches included in the list are currently guiding either European clubs or national teams of European countries. This is one of the evidences of the dominance of European football when it comes to money. Anyway, let us go through the list and I hope you will enjoy the list:

Luiz Felipe Scolari

World cup winning Brazilian coach is the highest paid coach at this moment in football. After losing his job at Chelsea midway through the last season (2008-09), Luiz Felipe Scolari joined Uzbekistan league champion Bunyodkor Tashkent this season. Scolari has been in coaching profession since 1982 and is currently earning a yearly salary of whopping €16.6m.

Jose Mourinho

Just three years back in 2006, Jose Mourinho was the highest paid coach in the football world when he was the boss of English club Chelsea. The current Inter Milan manager is now earning €11m per season which is the second highest salary paid to a soccer coach at this moment. In return, Mourinho also delivered success as he guided Inter Milan to win the Serie A title in 2008-09 season, his first season at San Siro.

Fabio Capello

Coach of several successes, Fabio Capello is one of the two coaches in this list who are managing a national team, rather than a club. He is the current manger of England national team and earning a €8.8m yearly, and thus, becoming the third highest paid soccer coach at this moment. When he was appointed as England coach in 2007, he had already been in coaching profession for 16 years. Capello started his coaching career at AC Milan in 1991-92 season and already managed high profile European clubs like Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid. The Italian coach has guided England to qualify for the 2010 world cup finals in emphatic fashion.

Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson comes fourth in the list of highest paid soccer coaches in the world with his €7 million salary per season at Manchester United. Ferguson has already become a legend at Manchester United and is widely regarded as one of the best football managers of all time. Since joining Manchester United in 1986, Ferguson led the club to win 11 premier league, 5 FA Cup, 3 league cup and 2 Champions League titles.

Roberto Mancini

Former Intern Milan manager Roberto Mancini is still getting paid an amount of €6 million by Inter Milan, even though he was sacked by the Italian giants in 2008 after his negative comment following his side’s defeat to Liverpool in Champions League second round. To be honest, I do not know why Inter Milan is still paying him such a big amount of salary. Anyway, during his coaching tenure, Inter Milan won three Serie A titles in 2005–06, 2006–07 and 2007-08 and two Italian cup titles in 2005 and 2006. Mancini also managed Fiorentina and Lazio.

Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti is the current manager of English club Chelsea. He is currently earning €6 million after his Summer move to the West London club from AC Milan. Former Italian international Ancelotti is one of the six coaches who won Champions League (formerly known as European Cup) both as a player and coach (for AC Milan on both roles). In fact, he achieved the distinction twice so far. He started his coaching career in 1995 at Reggiana and so far managed Parma, Juventus and AC Milan.

Manuel Pellegrini

Real Madrid is the richest club in the world and I am a bit surprised to see that their current coach Manuel Pellegrini comes 7th among the top ten highest paid football coaches. The Former Chile international has been appointed as Real Madrid boss in Summer 2009 and is currently earning €5.5 million per season at Real Madrid. Real Madrid spent more than $500 million in Summer 2009 transfer window buying the players like Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. So, I think, they should have given a higher salary to their coach.

Louis van Gaal

Bayern Munich is currently paying €5.2 million to their coach Louis van Gaal who joined the German giants in Summer 2009. The 58-year-old former Netherlands coach started his coaching career at Ajax in 1991 and also managed Barcelona for two terms. He led Ajax to win Champions League in 1994-95 and guided Barcelona to win two La Liga titles in 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.

Guus Hiddink

Hiddink is the second coach in the list who is now at the helm of a national team. The Dutch manager is currently guiding Russia national team and is earning a salary of €5 million per year. Since starting his coaching career in 1982 at De Graafschap, Hiddink managed the clubs like PSV Eindhoven, Fenerbahce, Valencia, Real Madrid, Real Betis and Chelsea, besides managing the national sides of Netherlands, South Korea and Australia.

Under Hiddink, South Korea reached 2002 world cup semi final, first Asian country to do so, and Australia qualified for 2006 world cup, which was their first world cup appearance in 32 years. During his tenure, PSV Eindhoven won a prestigious treble as the club won Dutch League, Dutch Cup and Champions League (formerly known as European cup).

Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is one of the most popular coaches of today’s football. He is best known for his ability to nurture young talents and help them flourish their potential. For example, Thierry Hendy became a legend in Arsenal under his guidance, though he was not a very highly-rated player when he joined Arsenal in 1997. The same thing happened to Cesc Fabregas who was picked up by Arsenal scouts in 2003 when he was at Barcelona youth. English striker Theo Walcott has also grown up under Wenger since joined the North London club in 2006.

So, no doubt, Arsene Wenger has an eye to pick up talented players and ability to bring out the best of them. Considering his quality as a manager, Wenger should have earned more than €4.8 million, an amount he is earning at Arsenal at this moment. In fact, Wenger was approached by Real Madrid with a lucrative offer in Summer 2009, but the French manager decided to stay at Arsenal as he thought his job at the club had not finished. Wenger joined Arsenal in 1996 from Nagoya Grampus Eight.
