Characters:

  • Sagar: Sagar is an excellent deep sea diver but he has a troubled past. A straight forward person, Sagar works for his friend Aarav and dreams to have his own boat someday. Sagar has a girlfriend named Mona (Lara Dutta).
  • Aarav: A rich, arrogant man, Aarav is the owner of Blue Shipping and Industries. He always likes to take big risks and hates the idea of losing. Aarav always badgers Sagar to search for the treasure.

Story:

The story of Blue Hindi movie takes place at the Bahamas. In 1949, a ship named “Lady in Blue” sunk in the sea of Bahamas. The ship was carrying large amount of gold treasure. Sagar works for Aarav, who always badgers him to go and find the gold of the “Lady in Blue.” Sagar on the contrary, does not want to talk about it. He is a happy-go-lucky guy who loves Mona and dreams to have his own boat someday. Everything changes, when Sagar’s estranged brother, Sam comes to the Bahamas with Mafia boss, Gulshan (Rahul Dev) is hot on his trail for an assignment worth 50 million dollars has gone wrong. Gulshan then kidnaps Mona and then tells Sagar to return the money within twenty four hours. He has no options but to go for the treasure of the “Lady in Blue.”

About the movie:

According to Taran Adarsh, Blue Hindi movie is an out-and-out entertainer, a perfect present for your Diwali. Go to the theatres, get a ticket and enjoy the movie. Yes, it is true that the story is taken from a Hollywood movie but ignore that you will see that Blue Hindi movie is something that has never been tried before in Hindi cinema. Kudos to Anthony D’Souza, the director scored aces in his first movie. It takes a lot of courage and determination to pull off such a thing. Not only Blue Hindi movie is a big-budget movie but also stars Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt; two most respected actors in Bollywood. Blue is very well-made entertaining movie. His only complain is that the climax could have been handled better.

The best thing about the movie is its camera work and action sequences. Bollywood Hungama says:

Anthony's expertise comes to the fore in several sequences. One sequence that needs to be singled out is when Sanju narrates the tragic past, how he was responsible for his father's death. It's simply incredible!

Major portions of the film have been filmed in the ocean and you can't stop admiring and appreciating the enormous contribution of the underwater cinematographer [Pete Zuccarini]. The lighting in those sequences deserves special mention. Also, the underwater sequences, which feature aquatic life like puffer fish, stingrays and sharks, hold tremendous appeal. Cinematography [Laxman Utekar] is gorgeous.

Glamsham gives Blue Hindi movie 1 out of five. It says that the movie is the biggest disaster of the year. The movie has no substance, script or dialogue. It further says:

The first hour is a drag, the following is even worse. The first scene itself is an indication of what is in store. Dutt and Akshay play with a shark! No, in fact they are shooing it away from their net! However, you wait patiently because the promos have been convincing. They then get into the boxing ring. There is no respite. From here, it moves from one weird scene to another.

As for the story, go figure it out. I'm still trying to figure out what was in the bag that cost 50 million dollars. Worse, I can't for the life of me fathom why Zayed Khan did not look into the bag, the size of a lap top case, which Rahul Dev gave him to deliver to another person for a fee of 50,000 Dollars.

Indiaserver.com says that Blue Hindi movie is an “OK” movie. The five underwater action sequences and three bike action are something unique for a Hindi movie. It further says:

Even though it is not a movie which falls into the category of mind-blowing commercial action thriller, I agree to the fact that it definitely offers something which is truly innovative and unique.

Even though the storyline is a very blurred one, the action-packed movie never allows the audience to feel its absence. The USP of the movie is the perfect blend of action and an unknown world.

Thaindian News gives Blue Hindi movie a rating of 1.5 out of 5. It says that the movie has poor direction and script. The movie lacks substance and “coolness quotient.” If you are looking forward to see some well shot underwater photography and cool action sequences then you can go for it. It further says:

A really interesting premise shot beautifully but messed big time by unimaginative writing and lackluster direction is what Blue shall always be remembered as. The setting is different no doubt, but where are the requisite twists and turns and pace which are a must for this genre of films? The so called major twist that comes out in the end can be guessed quiet earlier in the first half itself. Also, almost the entire first half moves around with zero grip on the audience with more than enough time wasted on character establishment. The much hyped shark sequences are a big let down what with barring the opening sequence of few minutes (where believe it or not Akshay and Dutt literally ride a shark) there is not a single scene where the sharks are a threat and get you on the edge of your seat. The bike chase sequences have been shot very well though. The underwater sequences have been superbly lit up and one needs to salute the team of cameramen involved for it. The climax is extremely “thanda’ and derives unintentional laughter as well. Songs don’t really fit in well and the Kylie Minogue starring Chiggy Wiggy number doesn’t really work on screen. However, the background music and sound editing is excellent.

Stardust gives Blue Hindi movie a three star rating. It says:

The direction of Anthony D’souza shows spark of genius in his first outing. He shows his commitment and grand vision in aquatic sequences, which must have been very difficult to shoot. The bike chase sequence and the other chase sequence on the running train are worth mentioning in this regard.

It must have taken a lot of courage from Anthony D’souza to envisage a marine action thriller on a scale which has never been done in bollywood so far. Even his handling of emotional sequence (Sanju relating his past) is very good. But climax needed some more punch from the director and could have been more impressive.

So far, this is the most negative review of the movie is given by Economic Times. It said that the large amount of money spent on the movie is a total waste. It further says:

In absence of a sane screenplay, the viewer is subjected to burnout action sequences and bike chases. By the time the oceanic treasure-hunt initiates in the climax, you see blue since the film is 'in deep water'. Sadly the authentic aquatic life is put to no active use as even the sharks seem to be harmlessly herbivorous. Rather the regular hero-villain combats are replicated in the oceans to no groundbreaking effect with the marine life playing passive spectators to the proceedings.

Mayur Puri's casual conversational dialogues sans any cinematic significance and the minimal background score fail to induce depth to the drama. The supposed suspense in the narrative is almost obvious from the start. A R Rahman's musical score is plain passable this time. The art design by Narendra Rahurikar is decent. Laxman Utekar's cinematography is fascinating as he captures the Bahamas beaches beautifully in his lens and uses effective close up frames on the cast. Designer Rina Dhaka deserves special mention for styling Lara Dutta at her sexiest best in those white, red, pink and bejeweled bikinis.

Performance:

In terms of performance, Blue Hindi movie is nothing extraordinary but not disastrous either. Bollywood Hungama says:

Sanjay Dutt carries his part well, although he looks very well-fed in some scenes. Akshay Kumar steals the show with a sterling performance. This would easily classify amongst his best works. Zayed Khan is highly competent. This, despite the fact that he's sharing the screen space with two hugely experienced actors.

Lara Dutta has never looked so good before. Though the story revolves around the guys, you can't overlook Lara's small but significant contribution to the film. Katrina Kaif [sp. app.] looks gorgeous and performs exceedingly well. The feminine charm [at the start specifically] would send the youth in a frenzy. Rahul Dev is first-rate. Kabir Bedi is hardly there.

Glamsham says:

The quality of the acting is what you would put up in a school play. Akshay Kumar is always dressed like a bandmaster, Sanjay Dutt is left to find his left foot as he struggles to groove to the beat (where was the choreographer?) and Lara Dutta is busy changing into stylish two-piece suits (the skimpy ones) to get underwater. If she is not in her swimming attire, she is busy shaking her body like a girl lost in a pub. As for Zayed Khan, he gives one the feeling that he is hanging around with a bunch of his school buddies. Oh yes, somewhere along the way Katrina Kaif also shows up with Rahul Dev. There's also Kylie Minogue. Did she know what she was getting into? I'm sure, she too is feeling blue!

BLUE is a picnic in the Bahamas for the cast and crew. I guess director Anthony D'Souza told the cast, 'Just get in front of the camera and do whatever you want.' All four are very unconvincing and you can even see them squirm in some scenes. Sanjay Dutt, I'm sure, will be hiding his face in his hands if he ever watches this film in its complete state. Never has he ever been so bored in a role.

Stardust says:

Akshay Kumar, who plays the character of a rich and ambitious businessman Aarav, has given a superlative performance. His underwater daredevilry is just unmatched and makes him stands out amongst the macho bunch of bollywood biggies. He looks completely in control of the situation and never overacts.

Sanjay Dutt, who plays the part of Akshay’s friend and employee, Sagar, performs his part with consummate ease. Sanjay is superb, where he relates story about his father’s death and his past trauma due to that. However, a little bit of trimming of his body would have shown him in more favorable light as a deep sea diving expert.

Zayed Khan, who plays the younger brother Sameer (Sam) of Sanjay Dutt, looks perfect for the part. His love for the bikes looks natural for his personality and age as shown in the flick. Zayed is able to hold his own ground even before Akki and Sanju in the film.

Rahul Dev, who plays the character of drug lord in the film, has portrays his character with requisite cruelness and villainous flavor. The audience would love to hate him.

DNA says:

For the actor himself, the film is a new low. Every time you step in to watch a Kumar film now, you are expecting something nonsensical, but you hope it at least entertains you in the bargain. After disappointing you every time in his last - we've lost count now - few films, this one just makes you hope that he'll finally realise that a film also needs a script!

Sanjay Dutt looks bloated, and no effort goes into ensuring that the paunch is somewhat hidden. He, however, puts in a decent effort. Zayed Khan is as far from being cool as the amount of effort he puts into looking it. Lara Dutta provides the appropriate eye candy to save the film from being a complete washout.

Conclusion:

In simple words, Blue Hindi movie may not be something extra-ordinary but it is very much enjoyable for its underwater scenes and beautifully shot action sequences.

  2. Waste of Time and Money!!! Not even worth watching on CAM print!

TO add to the insult some scences are shamelessly borrowed from Will Smith's many movies(Hitch, Bad Boys)!

Its just a series of slide shows from begining to end!!!

  5. Reminded me a little bit of John Woo style films - very chilled characters, fast paced story style, twists, etc.

    However, it was unbelievably bad!

Really disappointing, especially as I've seen every actor perform so brilliantly in the past.

  10. BLUE MOVIE SUCKS. THIS REVIEW IS REALLY AFTER WATCHING BLUE. SO MUCH TOLD & SHOWN & PUBLICIESED ABOUT THIS MOVIE & THAT WAS BCOZ TO MAKE PUBLICITY AND THE MOVIE DOSEN'T HAVE ANY THING BESIDES IDIOTIC DIALOUGES, STORY, SOME ACTORS ARE JUST WASTE IN THE MOVIE. GROW UP & DO NOT DO SUCH A FAKE PUBLICITY TO LOOT PEOPLES MONEY. MAKE MONEY FROM MOVIES LIKE TARE ZAMEEN PAR, DON 2, GHAJNI, BUT DO NOT CHEAT AUDIENCE. FOR ME THIS IS 5TH FLOP IN A ROW OF AKSHAY KUMAR. SANJAY DUTT WAS BETTER IN ALL THE BEST RATHER THAN BLUE

  11. BLUE= badboys+hitch+ torque+some other unseen hollywood film...

my only doubt is why should the bikers should go on top of a train and then jump back to the ground (infront of the train..)

another scene which made me laugh to the grounds is the scene where sanjay dutt mimcs badboys shootout... he actually shoots completely in different direction whn the so called villians are right behind him...

putting such a copycat film on to the international arena is definitely going to prove the illusion that bollywood is crap infact bigcrap.... filled with copycats..... think something original...

  12. Absolutely FANTASTIC movie. Everyone should watch this movie for the sheer brilliance of cinema. I fail to understand certain people understanding of basic film making. Here in Canada I went to see this movie with some of my Canadian friends who normally wouldn't care to understand a hindi movie. They came out spellbound after the show. They said they never expected the movie to be like that and thought it was close to be a hollywood flick.
I was a proud Indian showing off to all my friends.
STOP bashing this movie just because you like latka jhatka flick and has no taste. "Do you know this movie is first High Definition Movie made in Bollywood (I watched this at a special Community screening at a Cineplex Theatre)". The same goes to some poor critics in bollywood who drag every good effort down to sell their column.
    That's my two cents.
