The University of Mysore is one of the famous universities in India, founded by the then Maharaja of Mysore, His Highness Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his Dewan, Sir M.Visvesvarayya. The university was established on July 27, 1916 and the Maharaja of Mysore became its first chancellor. The University of Mysore became the first university outside the domain of the English administration in India. It is the sixth university in India as a whole and the first ever university in Karnataka. A state university of the affiliating type, the University of Mysore became an autonomous university on March 3, 1956 upon being recognized by the University Grants Commission. The main campus of Mysore University is located at the western end of the Kukkarahalli Lake. The university is located in a picturesque area of 739 acres. The university headquarters, the Crawford Hall, is located on the eastern end of the lake.
