Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik: A marriage not made in heaven?

Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik’s marriage is now the biggest topic of discussion every where in India and Pakistan. Sania Mirza is the female tennis star of India and Shoaib Malik is the former captain of Pakistan Cricket team. From the very beginning, this marriage caught media attention for all the wrong reasons. Sania is an Indian citizen and Shoaib Malik is a Pakistani citizen. For a long time, these two countries remained political rivals and after 26/11 attack, relationship between the two countries hit a new low.

Sania Mirza was previously linked with few other men. She was having an affair with Bollywood actor, Shahid Kapoor. News reports also said Sania Mirza was earlier engaged to a Hyderabad businessman, Sohrab Mirza, who was also her childhood friend. On the contrary, there was rumor about an affair between Shoaib Malik and Bollywood actress, Sayali Bhagat but Sayali Bhagat denied having any relationship with Shoaib Malik.

Sania Mirza was not doing very well in her games. She was also severely criticized by Muslim clerics for her way of dressing. They also criticized her for hanging around with Shoaib Malik before marriage. Shoaib Malik on the other hand, has been facing a one year ban for causing infighting within the team.

Things went out of control when it was revealed that Shoaib Malik was previously married to another Hyderabadi woman named Ayesha Siddiqui. Ayesha’s family claimed that the nikaah took place over telephone in 2002. However, Shoaib Malik said that he was not related to Ayesha Siddiqui. The Siddiquis then filed an FIR against Shoaib Malik after he announced that he will get married to Sania Mirza on April 15, 2010. Police then seized Shoaib’s passport.

Ayesha’s family had strong evidence including video clips and marriage certificates. Malik finally admitted his marriage to Ayesha Siddiqui and signed the divorce papers on April 7, 2010. Siddiqui’s lawyer, Barrister Farooq Hasan told reporters:

“Shoaib has admitted of his marriage to Ayesha. He has agreed to sign the divorce papers, but whether it has been signed so far has not been confirmed yet. This is was a safer bet for him,”

Dr. Shams Babar, a close friend of the Siddiqus, said that a compromise had taken place and Shoaib signed the divorce papers. The charges against him would be dropped.

Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza’s marriage was supposed to take place April 15, 2010. With all these problems, many thought that the marriage would be delayed. Then rumor spread out that the wedding date had been moved ahead on April 9, 2010. The Qazi refused to perform the nikaah without Shoaib’s passport. On the contrary, Sania Mirza’s family received a “no-objection certificate” from the Hyderabad police. The marriage finally took place on April 12, 2010 at a private gathering in Hyderabad. After the nikaah, the guests attended Zuhar prayers. Sania Mirza’s media co-ordinator, Rucha Nayak told reporters that the wedding ceremony was not publicized for it was a religious ceremony. Many big personalities were invited to the wedding including the entire family of Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan. Other personalities include Mahesh Bhupathi, Leander Paes and wife Rhea Pillai, Raza Murad and Kaajal Anand.

Other programs took place as per plan. Mehndi Ceremony took place on April 13, 2010 followed by Sangeet Ceremony and wedding reception tomorrow. The whole procedure went on very well and the Mirza family made it a grand party. Sania Mirza’s wedding dress was designed by designer brothers Shantanu and Nikhil.
