Established in 1940, Delhi College of Engineering is one of the top Engineering institutions in India. Initially, the institution was named Delhi Polytechnic and directly controlled by the Government of India. Since 1963, the control of the college had been handed down to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi. The institution is affiliated the University of Delhi since 1952. Prof. P.B. Sharma served as the first Vice Chancellor of the university.

In 2009, under the Vide Act 6 of NCT of Delhi the status of the institution had been upgraded to University. It was renamed Delhi Technological University.

Till 1989, Delhi Technological University operated from its campus located at the Kashmere gate in Old Delhi. That same year in May, construction of the new campus at Bawana road started. In 1995, the institution was shifted to Bawana road. The new campus has a library system, centralized computer center, sports complex, eight boys’ hostels, three girls’ hostel, and a married couples’ hostel.
