Kerala is a state located in south-western India. It was created on November 1, 1956 under the States Reorganization Act bringing together the areas where Malayalam is the dominant language.
Kerala has a rich historical background. The name, “Keralaputra” can be found in a rock inscription of the 3rd Century BC by the great Mauryan Empire, King Ashoka. The region was ruled by the Chera dynasty around 1 BC. Since it is located near the sea, it also served as a major trading center where Greeks, Romans and Arab traders visited frequently.
