France President Intervenes to Stop World Cup Squad Crisis

Nicolas Sarkozy, the president of France, has now stepped in to sort out the problems in France’s World Cup squad in South Africa. The crisis was triggered by France Football Federation’s decision to exclude striker Nicolas Anelka following his refusal to make public apology for his foul-mouthed outburst at coach Raymond Domenech at the half time during France’s 2-0 loss to Mexico.

Anelka has already been sent home. Now, France squad members are protesting against this decision and refused to train following a fall out between captian Patrice Evra and the fitness coach which resulted in the resignation of team director.

Now, President Sarkozy has instructed spots minister Roselyne Bachelot to look into the matter and sort out the problems as early as possible. Latest reports available in the media suggest that France players have returned to training following a meeting with the team management.

Roselyne Bachelot has called for ‘dignity’ and ‘responsibility’ from the players and indicated that disciplinary action would be taken on those who are involved in the row. Former synchronised swimmer and the current Economy minister, Christine Lagarde, has also criticized the players for their appalling behavior during the world’s most prestigious football tournament.

After a draw with Uruguay and a loss to Mexico, France’s World Cup hopes have come to a near end which could only be revived though a large margin victory over host South Africa in their final group match. Even that would not be enough for the 1998 champions, if the other match between Uruguay and Mexico end up in a draw.
