Saina Nehwal Clinched Indonesia Open Title

Saina Nehwal, the star badminton player from India, has won the Indonesia Open title defeating Japanese finalist Sayaka Sato 21-19, 13-21, 21-11 on Sunday. With this victory, she has clinched her third Super Series title.

Currently 3rd in the BWF (Badminton World Federation) ranking, Saina looked little shaky at the start of game, but got her rhythm back with time. Though she lost the second set 13-11, Saina easily bagged the third set, and thus, winning the match.

Born and raised in Haryana and raised in Hyderabad, the 20-year-old youngster came into the lime light in 2009 when she won the 2009 Indonesia Super Series, and thus, becoming the first woman badminton player from India to win a Super Series title. She last week clinched her second Super Series title winning the 2010 Singapore Open.

There are many who compare Saina Nehwal with India’s tennis star Sania Mirza. However, here it is noteworthy that the achievement of Saina Nehwal is better than that of Sania Mirza. While Mirza could never reach at the top 10 of WTA ranking, Saina Nehwal is currently third ranked badminton player.

It is time the media starts to give proper coverage to Saina Nehwal and Indian girls start to take her as a role model.

  1. it is absolutely nonsense to compare the two stars with each other. Badminton is considered a low profile indoor kids' game and has no comparison with tennis. Despite Sania reached only at 28 for singles and 18 for doubles, she was awarded with two prestigious Indian national awards because it was understood that to reach that level in tennis was exceptional.
