The Way Americans Can Reach Round of 16: USA vs Algeria

While English fans are worried about England’s chances to qualify for the second round, football fans in the US are no less worried than their England counterparts. Both USA and England are equal on 2 points after 2 matches. Now, USA would face Algeria and England would take on Slovenia in their final group matches on 23 June.

Both USA and England drew their first two group stage matches. USA drew with England 1-1 in their tournament opener, and then came from behind to draw with Slovenia 2-2. After the draw with USA, England was held to a goalless draw by minnows Algeria.

Now, a win over Algeria would secure USA a place in the Round of 16 without requiring the result of the other match. However, a draw would keep USA’s hopes hanging in the balance and the result of the England match would decide USA’s fate.

If both the matches end up in draw, then both USA and England would be level on points as well as on goal difference. Then the number of goals scored in all the group matches would come into account and decide who would join Slovenia in the next round.

If England and USA win their respective matches, both would reach the round of 16, leaving behind Algeria and Slovenia. However, if England wins and USA loses, England would accompany Slovenia to the next round as the group champion. However, an England loss would not be a problem for the Americans if they can defeat Algeria, but if USA draws and England loses, then USA would join Slovenia in the knock out stage.

There is also a possibility both Algeria and Slovenia could make it to the second round. To make it happen, Algeria and Slovenia would have to win their final group matches.

  1. Americans are getting queasy for the next games outcome. It is a make or break game for the team and no one wants an error during the game.
