World Cup Group H Standings: Spain and Chile Moves to the Next Round

Spain and Chile have progressed to the round of 16 from Group H in the World Cup Football 2010. After defeating Chile 2-1 in their final group match, Spain ensured their next round progress as the Group H champion, while Chile takes the second spot and would accompany Spain to the second round.

Switzerland, who was the other candidate to make it to the last 16, was held to a goalless draw by minnows Honduras, and thus, losing their last chance to qualify for the knock out stage.

Both Spain and Chile have equal 6 points, but Spain finished at the top of the point table due to better goal difference. Switzerland, at the third place, could secure 4 points, while Honduras finished at the bottom with 1 point to their credit.

Spain went into the match knowing that anything less than a win over Chile could show them the exit door. From the very beginning of the match, they were in attacking mode and created a number of scoring opportunities. Spain opened scoring in the 25th minute when David Villa slotted the ball into open net. With this goal, Villa is now one of the three joint top-scorer of the tournament with 3 goals to his credit. Spain doubled the lead just 12 minutes later when Andres Iniesta shot past the Chilean keeper with a superb placement.

Chile reduced the lead to 2-1 through a Rodrigo Millar strike just 2 minutes into the second half. The Latin Americans had two more clear opportunities in the match which they squandered off and thus failed to clinch the top spot in the group.

Spain would now face Portugal in their round of 16 match on 29 June, while Chile has to take on Brazil on 28 June.
