Madras University has a rich historical background. The university is one of the three oldest universities established in British India along with Calcutta University, and Mumbai University. The University of Madras is organized on the model of the University of London. It was incorporate on September 5, 1857 by an Act of the Legislative Council of India. The University is located in the Southern City of Chennai, currently known as Madras.

The university has four campuses- Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, and Taramani. It has more than fifty departments that offer a wide range of courses.

In 2004, all the engineering courses of the university were shifted to Anna University. The university also affiliates many colleges and conducts research on various fields. There are 43 external research institutes.
