Carlos Bocanegra Signed for AS Saint-Etienne

American defender Carlos Bocanegra has joined French club AS Saint-Etienne in a move away from Rennes today (16 July) for a reported transfer fee of £400,000. Bocanegra is the captain of US national football (soccer) team and has recently led his country in the FIFA World Cup 2010.

Carlos Bocanegra is a versatile player who can play at various positions in the field. Though he is a specialist center back, he can also play as a left back or defensive midfielder. The 31-year-old joined Rennes in 2008 from Premier League club Fulham. Over the last 2 years, he played 64 league matches for Rennes and scored 2 goals.

Bocanegra has been one of the regular faces in the US national team for a long time and has so far represented USA in 83 international matches with 12 goals to his credit.

USA put on some very good performances in the recently concluded FIFA World Cup 2010 before being knocked out by Ghana.

Carlos Bocanegra enjoyed his best years at club level during his 4-year-stint at Fulham. He represented Fulham in 116 Premier League matches.

Rennes has an automatic replacement for Bocanegra in Samuel Souprayen who spent the last season on loan at Dijon. Now, it would be interesting to see if Bocanegra can continue his good form for Saint-Etienne.
