Kerala is an Indian state located in the south-western India. It was created through the passing of the States Reorganization Act on November 1, 1956. With this act, the areas dominated by Malayalam speakers were brought together. The state of Kerala covers an area of 38,863 sq km. Thiruvananthapuram is the capital and the largest city of Kerala.

The economy of Kerala is based on service based industries. The state has a higher per capita GDP (Rs. 37,372) and higher economic productivity. It also has the highest Human Development Index in India.

Interestingly, as per Global Hunger Index 2008, the severity of hunger situation is serious which lower than “alarming.” This low GDP and productivity figures along with higher development figures is known as “Kerala Phenomenon” or “Kerala Model.” This mainly happened due to its strong service sector. Many people describe Kerala’s economy as “democratic socialist welfare state.” Some also use the term “Money Order Economy.” There are very few manufacturing plants and corporations that are headquartered in Kerala.
