In his Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, Gaius Plinius Secundus a Roman author, naturalist, and natural philosopher, said that Muziris in Kerala could be reached within 14 days time from the Red Sea port in the Egyptian coast depending on the South West monsoon winds.

In ancient times, Kerala served as a major sea port due to its connection with the Arabian sea. The ports of Kerala were the busiest among all the trade and travel routes around the world at that time. Kerala traders used to business with all the major Red Sea ports and the Mediterranean ports and ports in the Far East. Kerala was famous for spice trade.
