Lava International launched B2 and B5 handsets with alpha keypads

On July 15, 2010, Lava International Ltd., one of the top mobile handset producers in India, launched two new handsets- Lava B2 and Lava B5. The two handsets come with Alpha keypad. The company claimed that the Lava B5 is the first phone in the world to come out with an Alpha keypad.

Unlike traditional multi-tap or QWERTY keypad, the Alpha keypad keys are arranged in ABCD order for the ease of users. The main reason behind introducing the new keyboard is to make texting and e-mailing via mobile phones easier. The new handsets and are user-friendly and people would be able to adapt them faster compared to QWERTY keypad phones.

The Lava B5 is a dual-SIM mobile phone. It sports a 2.2 inch QVGA TFF screen with E-mail supports. It has a 2 mega-pixel camera. The phone is powered by a 1400 mAh battery. Other features include- JAVA,MP3, MP4, FM, Bluetooth, 3.5 mm universal audio jack. The phone’s memory can be expanded up to 8 GB via T flash card. The Lava B5 would cost Rs.4,399.

With these new handsets, Lava International intends to capture 10 to 15 percent of the business phone market of India. Recently, Synovate, a reputed market research firm, on behalf of Lava International did a market study which revealed that a large part of consumers, who are interested to use business class phone, are not comfortable using them.

Lava International co-founder, SN Rai said that most of the consumers surveyed revealed that the existing QWERTY keypad phones are cumbersome to use and would feel comfortable using keypads where the letters are arranged in their own alphabetical order.
