Formerly known as the University of Bombay, the University of Mumbai is a has been given a five-star ranking by NAAC. It has world ranking 401.

According to a Government Gazette dated September 4, 1996, the name of the institution was changed to University of Mumbai. It has two abbreviated version University of Mumbai (UoM) and Mumbai University (MU).

The University of Mumbai is one of the oldest and reputed higher educational institutions in India. Established in 1857 after as a consequence of “Wood’s Education Despatch,” the University of Mumbai is one of the first three universities established in India. Initially, the Elphinstone College building was used for Mumbai University.

The university is of affiliating nature and its jurisdiction covers the city of Mumbai and the districts of Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The institution offers Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees to students.

The University of Mumbai also has affiliations with several high ranking research institutes in the world including Institute of Chemical Technology (formerly UDCT), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), and the Tata Memorial Hospital
