According to a Government Gazette dated September 4, 1996, the name of the institution was changed to University of Mumbai. It has two abbreviated version University of Mumbai (UoM) and Mumbai University (MU).

Established in 1857 after as a consequence of “Wood’s Education Despatch,” the University of Mumbai is one of the first three universities established in India. Initially, the Elphinstone College building was used for Mumbai University.
