Spain: What Next After World Cup Glory?

After their triumph in World Cup Football 2010, Spain is now the world champion as well as European champion. Even couple of years back, Spain was considered as one of the most underachieved football country in the world, but today they are just one of the 8 teams in the world who tasted World Cup glory and the fifth European team to have achieved World Cup title. Now, the question is what would be the next mission for the Spaniards.

Winning the World Cup Football 2010 title, Spain has emulated West Germany’s success in 1974 World Cup when the Germans clinched the World Cup title as the reigning European champion. Now, Spain can repeat history once again in Euro 2012 by successfully defending their European title.

History shows that France is the only European side who won the European championship as the reigning world champion. No other European team has achieved this feat, but Spain now has a very good chance to emulate France’s success in Euro 2000 by winning the Euro 2012 title.

Spain has been doing excellently well under their current coach Vicente del Bosque. Under his coaching, Spain clinched record 15-consecutive victories in between 2008 and 2009 and went 35 consecutive matches unbeaten, another world record shared with Brazil.

It is most likely that Spain’s aging key players like Carles Puyol, Joan Capdevila, Xavi would continue their service in Euro 2012, and even if any of them retires, there are some quality replacements in Cesc Fabregas, Jesús Navas, Raúl Albiol and Álvaro Arbeloa. Overall, Spain has all the chances to repeat history once again in two years.
