Tottenham Hotspur Targets Taye Taiwo of Marseille

Olympique Marseille left back Taye Taiwo has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. The Nigeria international has 1 year left in his current contract with the French club. So, Marseille is now looking to earn some cash by selling the 25-year-old full back before the playing becoming a free agent at the end of the next season.

Marseille has valuated the Nigerian at around £8.5 million and so far received just one formal offer made by Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid. Reports available in the media suggest that Tottenham is planning a better offer for Taye Taiwo, even though it is less likely to match Marseille’s valuation.

Two other Premier League clubs, Birmingham City and Sunderland, are also eyeing on Taiwo, but Tottenham seems to be in pole position now in the race of securing his service.

Tottenham Hotspur has better financial capability and more importantly they can offer Champions League football. At the moment, the North London club has two left back options in Gareth Bale and Benoit Assou-Ekotto. Now, Taiwo’s arrival would provide manager Harry Redknapp with more options ahead of a busy season.

Tottenham Hotspur last season clinched a top four finish in Premier League, and thus, qualified for Champions League for the first time.

Taye Taiwo joined Marseille in 2004 from Lobi Stars. Over the last 6 years, he represented Marseille in 161 league matches. Now, he is a highly rated left back in French League.
