Muttiah Muralitharan Retires with becoming First Player with 800 Test Wickets

Sri Lankan spin wizard, Muttiah Muralitharan, has become the first bowler to have taken 800 wickets in Test cricket. He got the 3 wickets that he needed in the second innings. Not only Muttiah Muralitharan got the wickets but also Sri Lanka won the test against India.

Muttiah Muralitharan started the first test of the three-match Test series with 792 wickets and he needed eight more wickets to reach the 800-wicket in Test cricket. It was a big challenge for him as he announced that the 1st Test match against India at Galle International Stadium is his final Test match.

Muralitharan was the centre of all attention from the beginning of the test match that started on July 18. He took 5 wickets in the first innings and required 3 more wickets to make a world record. However, he could manage to get three more wickets and the victims are Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha. He finished the match with 8 wickets for 191.

Picking the wicket of Pragyan Ojha, Muralitharan did not only dismiss Indian cricket team but also fulfilled his dream. Though, he had to struggle hard and bowl almost 45 overs in the second innings.

It seemed that Lasith Malinga would not let Murali to get to 800. It was a battle between Murali and Malinga left on the final day. However, Muralitharan won the battle at the end.

Fast bowler Lasith Malinga took five wickets in the second innings and it threatened that Murali will have to end his Test career one wicket short from 800.
