Netherlands vs Uruguay: Who Will Win?

Netherlands and Uruguay are facing each other on 6 July in the first semi final of the World Cup Football 2010. Both sides are now looking to make it to the tournament final winning this affair, but they understand that it would be tough to accomplish.

Netherlands defeated Slovakia and tournament favorite Brazil in the previous knock out rounds and has all the reasons to be confident ahead of the semi final showdown with Uruguay.

On the other hand, Uruguay reached the last four for the first time in 40 after defeating South Korea and Ghana in the round of 16 and quarter final respectively. It is true that Uruguay faced comparatively low-profile opponents in the knock out stage, but one can not deny the fact that Uruguay players have proven their quality and talent so far in the tournament.

It is always very tough to predict on a match of this level where both teams are ready to give their best to become the world champion. On pen and paper, Netherlands is clearly favorite in the match against Uruguay, considering the squad strength and their recent form.

Netherlands seems to be more balanced as a team. Their midfield is very strong. In front of back four, they have a holding midfielder in Nigel de Jong and a central midfielder in Mark van Bommel. Overall, their defense is always shielded by two physically strong players.

In attack, they have creative players like Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt. In the up front, the Dutch have a prolific scorer in Robin van Persie.

Uruguay’s best hopes lie in their attack, but in the absence of Luis Suarez, the South Americans would face it tough to break the Dutch defense featuring experienced players like Bronckhorst and Heitinga.

In Suarez’s absence, Diego Forlan has got extra responsibility that a player of his quality should deal with successfully. The most important thing is that Uruguayan defense must be up to the mark to nullify the Dutch attacks orchestrated by Robben and Sneijder, if they really want to reach the final for the first time since 1950.
