Real Madrid, Steven Gerrard, Liverpool: Who would Gain What?

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been the top priority for the newly appointed Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho in the Summer transfer market. Real Madrid already made a £20 million bid for the 29-year-old creative midfielder, but Liverpool has valuated him in the region of £35 million.

Now, reports out in the media suggest that Real Madrid could offer either Dutch attacking midfielder Van der Vaart or Argentina’s defensive midfielder Fernando Gago for Gerrard in a part-swap part-cash deal. Well, it seems that both the clubs and Gerrard would gain something if the proposed deal is materialized.

Liverpool is under huge debt and a number of other key players including Fernando Torres, Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun would most probably leave the club.

Now, if the Gerrard deal is done, Liverpool would get a quality player like Van der Vaart or Gago without spending anything and an amount in the range of £20 million which would be enough to sign another midfielder to strengthen the midfield. In fact, Liverpool’s new manager Roy Hodgson is a long-time admirer of Van der Vaart.

Steven Gerrard, at 29, would love to play for a team who regularly play in Champions League. Given Liverpool’s current form and financial condition, it seems less likely that the Al Reds would be able to accomplish ‘top four’ finish consistently in the years to come.

Moreover, Liverpool is not in a position to be a force to make serious bid for the Premier League title in the coming seasons. In contract, Real Madrid could be a stronger force under Mourinh, and Gerrard could win many titles with the Bernabeu outfits.

Securing the service of Gerrard, Real Madrid could have a fearsome midfield featuring holding midfielder Xabi Alonso, winger Cristiano Ronaldo, and two creative midfielders in Gerrard and Kaka operating in the middle.
