Sri Lanka Scored 256/2 After Day 1 of the First Test against India

Two centuries from Kumar Sangakkara and Tharanga Paranavitana have helped Sri Lankan cricket team to take control on the first day of the first Test match against India at Galle International Stadium. Sri Lanka could score 256 for 2 until rain interrupted the game early on the opening day of the five-day Test match.

Both Kumar Sangakkara and Tharanga Paranavitana scored centuries that helped the host team to make a big innings in front of the World number 1 Test ranked team. Scoring 103 from 145 balls with 12 boundaries, captain Sangakkara got dismissed and left Sri Lanka 236-2. However, opening batsman Paranavitana remained not out for 110. He finished the day with Mahela Jayawardene who scored unbeaten 8 runs.

Winning the toss, Sri Lankan captain decided to bat first. Later it was proved to be a right decision. Despite losing the wicket of Tillakaratne Dilshan at 55, both Sangakkara and Paranavitana led the team successfully.

Tharanga Paranavitana scored his maiden Test century in his 11th Test match. Before that, his highest score was 73 that he scored against Pakistan in 2009. He had to play 229 balls to reach his three-figure mark. Twenty-eight-year-old player made 180-run partnership with Kumar Sangakkara in the second wicket stand.

Indian bowlers were not up to the mark. Looking at the batting of Sri Lankan batsmen, it seemed that Indian bowlers were very ordinary. They could not put any pressure over the Lankan batsmen. Opening bowling pair Ishant Sharma and Abhimanyu Mithun could make some movement with the new ball, but it did not bring any result.

The injury of Harbhajan Singh proved to be an obstacle for India to make a strong spin bowling attack. He continued his game with his injury.

Debutant seam bowler, Abhimanyu Mithun, celebrated his maiden Test wicket after trapping Tillakaratne Dilshan in the first ball of his 11th over. Second wicket was taken by Virender Sehwag who dismissed Kumar Sangakkara.
